RED STATE

Ever since Clerks (co-winner of the Filmmakers Trophy at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival), Kevin Smith has been known for his sharp, subversive, comedic writing. He shifts from comedy to horror with RED STATE and aptly demonstrates that good writing transcends genre.

RED STATE begins by following three horny high-school boys who come across an online ad from an older woman looking for a gang-bang. Boys being boys, they hit the road to satisfy their libidinal urges. But what begins as a fantasy takes a dark turn as they come face-to-face with a terrifying "holy" force with a fatal agenda.

Instead of relying on archetypes and predictable formulas, Smith meticulously fashions all-too-real characters, utilizing exceptional performances (notably by Michael Parks) and an intelligent script. His realistic style fives the film an intimate feeling, heightening the terror to biblical proportions. Red State is a shocking new kind of horror film that aggressively confronts higher powers and extreme doctrines with a vengeance.

Starring: Michael Parks (Kill Bill 1 & 2, From Dusk Till Dawn), John Goodman (Evan Almighty, The Big Lebowski), Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Michael Angarano (The Forbidden Kingdom).

Written & Directed By: Kevin Smith, Produced By: Jon Gordon

ELITE SQUAD: THE ENEMY WITHIN

Returning to the mean streets of Rio de Janeiro, ELITE SQUAD: THE ENEMY WITHIN brings a new chapter to the story of Captain Nascimento as he takes on the rampant corruption in Rio’s city government. After a violent prison riot that ends in the controversial shooting of an inmate, Nascimento is pulled from the hard-edged BOPE unit and, for political reasons, promoted to Director of Surveillance, while his partner Mathias is stripped of his rank and put under house arrest.

Meanwhile, Nascimento’s ex-wife has re-married with Fraga, a devout liberal who berates the Rio government for their reactionary tactics. To add salt to his wounds, Fraga enlists Rafa to help him in the office, and Nascimento finds Fraga as a rival in both his professional and personal lives after Fraga uses the prison shooting issue as a platform to run win a seat as a legislator. Nascimento immerses himself in his mission, increasing the power of the BOPE unit more and more, wiping out the drug trade in Rio. But this merely opens the door for corrupt cops to find new ways of threatening and murdering the people of Rio. The conflict moves beyond the streets into a full-blown investigation of the entire system from the inside, forcing Nascimento to reevaluate his allegiances for the sake of his countrymen and his family.

Further refining the bravura filmmaking technique and arresting narrative, ELITE SQUAD 2: THE ENEMY WITHIN expands the universe of Padilha’s wildly popular original, for which he picked up over 20 awards, including the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and Cinema Brazil’s Grand Prize. In addition to Wagner Moura returning as Captain Nascimento, the film also stars worldwide recording artist Seu Jorge, previously featured in CITY OF GOD and THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU.

Starring: Wagner Moura (Paraiso Tropical, Elite Squad 2, Romance), Taina Muller (Cao Sem Dono), Seu Jorge (City of God).

Directed By: Jose Padilha, Written By: Jose Padilha, Braulio Mantovani and Rodrigo Pimentel
